Assignment Due Wednesday, Jan. 21
President Bush is leaving office with the lowest approval rate in recent history. In his final public address from the White House, President Bush recalled the ups and downs of his eight-year tenure and said he was willing to make the tough decisions. What is your view of the Bush presidency? Remember to write an interesting lead, give your opinion early and clearly, and support it with factual information and interesting detail. Also, there is not a hard and fast length requirement, but most Navigator articles run about 300 words.

ReplyDeletePresident George W. Bush left office early this morning with one of the lowest approval ratings in US presidential history, but this doesn’t mean that he was a bad president. A major factor when the public decided Bush was a horrible president was and is the war in Iraq. Most people don’t know the real reason we went to Iraq, but here it is. Iraq was an unstable country with strong terrorism. Our soldiers went to Iraq to make it a stabilized country with a stronger government. If Iraq was to become stabilized then the thinking was more of the Middle East would change for the better. This was the first and main reason our soldiers went to war.
ReplyDeleteI understand why people are hurt from this war; many people have died and some don’t know why it had to be a person they knew. I have a brother who is twenty one years old and just got back from Afghanistan. I also have a cousin who just completed his second term, totaling three years, in Iraq. Also, one other close family member is in Iraq right this minute. My biggest fear when my family was at war was, and is that they would die. My fears have not come true, unfortunately the fears of the families of others soldier have come true; their family members died. Even with everyone I know that died, I still believe Bush did well. He wasn’t perfect but he did the best he could for our country. History isn’t history until 100 years later, so looking back, America will look differently on this war and Bush as a president.
If whether a president was a "good president" or not depends on their rating when they leave office, then President Bush was the worst president in recent history. When we look at the approval rating though we have to think about all that he faced in his presidency. President Bush did not have an uneventful presidency. In the very beginning of his first term in office there was a large scale terrorist attack on American soil. President Bush's response to this was to declare war on the terrorist and terrorist nations. The questions that has been asked many times since is did he trick us to finnish his father's war? When thinking about the answer to this question I can't help but wonder what anybody else would have done in his position. We have to wonder how much information was he given that we weren't or was he getting the same information we were? He was the President of one of the leading nations of the world and couldn't afford to make the country look weak. there is no question that there were comments made along the way that the country could have done with out, such as telling us that "the mission is accomplished" when it clearly isn't, however, Bush wasn't just faced with man made disasters he was also faced with natural ones. Everyone remembers Katrina, the devastation that it left behind, and the recovery attempts that are still being attempted. After all of that, after most of the nation had begun to think of him as a lame duck, the Bush administration took another blow in the form of the stock market crash. In his final days in office bush had to help figure out a solution to another problem faced by America. Bush worked hard while he was in office, and I believe that he did what he thought was best at the time. Everyone may not have agreed with every choice that he made, but he did make the choices and didn't leave us floundering.
ReplyDeleteAmerica has decided that they wanted a change, and so in with the new President Barack Obama, and out with the old, President George Bush. President Bush may be leaving office with the lowest approval rates in recent history, but now we have a chance to change what it is that we feel he did wrong, and maybe in a few years, or generations, the world an America will be able to look at the Bush administration with new eyes, to decided if he was really a bad president or if he was just a guy dealing with a lot of bad things all at once.
